Teaching calligraphy in a Singapore primary school

After the borders were open for Singapore - Malaysia, a friend of mine reached out to me for an opportunity to teach calligraphy in one of Singapore’s famous primary schools, Kuo Chuan Primary School, Singapore.

The class duration is 2 hours and we have a total of 37 participants attended this session. It is a bit overwhelmed for me at first, but with a Visualizer and Microphone, it wasn’t as bad as having to attend to the students individually.

I have previously taught in Singapore primary school before and I was excited for this one because I love to teach kids. These kids are aged 9 to 11 years old. Some pictures below.

I started with some basic drills just to get the participants to warm up and get to know the pen that they’ll be using for the workshop. I try to keep the class as cheerful as possible and not make the class too ‘technical’ and boring.

At the end of the session, they will have a go at creating greeting cards for their friends or loved ones. They were so excited because I prepared the greeting cards with a bit of watercolor splashes. These are a few that I have selected. It’s so cool to watch them create this as they’ve only learnt it for 2 hours.
